INVITATION

to the Fifth World Landslide Forum, November 2 – 6, 2020, Kyoto, Japan
Implementing and Monitoring the ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships 2015-2025
-Voluntary contribution to the Sendai Framework 2015-2030 and
the Agenda 2030-Sustainable Development Goals-

Dear Colleagues of the World Landslide Community,

The International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) and the ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships 2015-2025 will invite you to join the 5th World Landslide Forum to be held in November 2-6, 2020, Kyoto Japan. This conference is held as a mid-term evaluation of the ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships, voluntary contribution to the Sendai Framework 2015-2030 and the Agenda 2030-Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11 Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The effects of climate change and the progress of urbanization shall intensify the landslide risk to human settlements in mountainous and coastal areas in many countries. An opportunity must be found to mobilize in the medium and long term a global alliance which will accelerate and incentivize action for landslide disaster risk reduction during this Forum. The Kyoto 2020 Commitment of the World Landslide Community is examined to be achieved in WLF 5 in order to serve this purpose. A topic in WLF5 is the 5th of November “World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD)” adopted by 70th UN General Assembly 2015 based on the understanding of,

Tsunami are generated by sudden submarine topographic movement, such as:

Submarine volcanic eruptions;
Landslides near a coastline or at the bottom of the ocean; and
Submarine crustal deformations accompanying earthquakes.

Tsunami caused by coastal and submarine landslides has not been well studied as well as the climate change effect. For intensifying the proactive response to reduce landslide disaster risk, the following five themes are proposed;

Theme 1: Sendai Partnerships and Kyoto 2020 Commitment
Theme 2: Hazard and vulnerability mapping, vulnerability and risk assessment
Theme 3: Technologies for monitoring, resting, analyzing, simulating and early warning
Theme4: Societal landslide disaster risk reduction, and capacity development
Theme 5: Landslide research frontiers

ICL will publish a thematic issue “ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships 2015-2025” of Journal Landslides in October 2020. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to be invited lecturers in WLF5. This issue will be free access before and during WLF5.

I look forward to meeting and discussing with you for landslide disaster risk reduction in Kyoto, 2020.
